What to expect

The surgical weight loss journey

Undergoing weight loss surgery can be very overwhelming, but we are with you every step of the way. Below is a general path you will follow and what you can expect on your weight loss journey.

Referral

The first step is to meet with your local GP (General Practitioner) to discuss weight loss and they will make a referral to our service

Meet your Surgeon

Your surgeon take you through the benefits and disadvantages of the different surgical options and medically assess you for surgery.  You will have plenty of opportunities to ask questions and support people are welcome.

Specialist referrals

Referrals are made by your Surgeon to other specialists for you to visit including a dietician and psychologist, and if needed other medical specialists (general physician, endocrinologist, sleep specialist).

Meet your Surgeon

Once you have seen the specialists, the Surgeon will meet with you to review these reports and if all is well, plan a date for surgery.

Pre-op Diet

14 days prior to surgery you will need to commence a very low calorie diet (VLCD). This allows your liver to reduce in size which will make your surgery easier.

Surgery

All going well you will be admitted to hospital for 2 to 3 days following your surgery. During this time you will graduate from a clear fluid to free fluid diet.

Hospital discharge

Prior to discharge from hospital we need to ensure that:

(1) you are comfortable and your pain is controlled

(2) you are able to keep up your fluid requirements (this is critical especially in the warmer months)

 (3) Any other concerns and medical issues have been addressed.

Meet your Surgeon

You will see your Surgeon in the weeks following your Surgery to track your recovery progress.
